For many students, internships are a stepping stone towards a promising career. However, securing an opportunity is an arduous task-something that requires work! Having an immaculate resume alone cannot guarantee you that dream internship, if you don’t plan ahead of time:
Dress for Success
First impressions are everything. The last thing you want is to be turned down based on your attire. Dressing in a business appropriate clothing sends a message that you respect your potential employer.
Arrive on time
Tardiness is a big red flag when it comes to showing up for an interview! It demonstrates lack of discipline, and your heedlessness towards the interviewer’s time. It is always a good idea to pull up the address on your map in advance and to arrive a few minutes early for the interview.
Conduct research about the company
Make sure you research about the company prior to your interview. This goes to show that you are genuinely interested in working, and have done your homework. Take time to surf the company’s website, and read about its offerings, new developments, mission and vision.
When presented with an opportunity to speak, you have to articulate your ideas in a manner that convinces the interviewee that you are the best fit for the job. Also, bear in mind to highlight your accomplishments without sounding too boastful.
It is imperative that you take time out to send a thank you note to your interviewer, and express your gratitude for his or her time and consideration. This shows that you are a courteous person, and are eager about the opportunity.
